STRIVE THIRD SECTOR DELEGATE ELECTION 2019-2021 | Sara Ali, Children 1st

My name is Sara Ali and I am the Service Manager for Children 1st. I am putting myself forward to be third sector representative for the Childrens’ Strategic partnership, as I believe I have the skills and experience to represent the third sector within this platform.

I have worked in the voluntary sector for 15 years. During this time I have worked with babies all way through to older adults. The people I have worked with have faced a range of issues, substance, abuse, mental health issues, housing and poverty issues, disabilities, school engagement issues and unemployment. I have worked in services that deliver street work, peer support, family support, employability skills training, therapeutic mental health support, housing and money advice, night shelters, homeless hostels, volunteer mentoring.

I have worked in very small locality based charities to my current role in a national charity I understand the strength and the limitations faced by both. I feel that my experiences with both will allow me to responsive to the needs and challenges of both. I feel that this broad range of experience of work within third sector across both Edinburgh and east Lothian will allow me to engage fully with all third sector services, and represent them well.

I will ensure that I will take the time and engage with the smaller charities who struggle to find the time to share their views. I feel that in my current role I am working to improve links with over voluntary organisations, and in this delegate role I could develop this further.

I have worked in both Edinburgh and East Lothian, I think we can learn from other local authorities about how to improve coordination across the third sector. I will also work with Strive and the CSP to improve third sector involvement across East Lothian
