East Lothian Sporting Memories Network runs reminiscence groups for isolated older peoplen by helping to gather and collate local sporting heritage material from the County’s sports clubs and the participants of the groups in the form of stories and images. The Sporting Memories Foundation supports older people across the UK living with dementia, depression and loneliness by engaging them in social activities and helping them to recall memories of watching or playing sport.
Talking about sport from days gone by is a great way of engaging people, especially where short term memory makes conversation about more everyday things difficult.
Weekly day time groups are running in sports clubs, community centres, day centres, pubs and libraries across East Lothian.
This opportunity is looking for someone who has an interest in sport to help support or lead a group with other volunteers. By leading or supporting the group you will be looking to get the participants to share their memories and thoughts on sport from the past, to delve deeper into their sporting pasts and to help build a collection of memories from both participating in sport or watching sport. You will also help to organise gentle games and other indoor light activities.
There will be full training provided for anyone wishing to volunteer as well as full support and supervision.
