What is the Uniform Bank ?

In the summer of 2015 School Uniform Banks popped up throughout the country. This was in recognition of the need to help families to provide suitable uniform for their children. Here in East Lothian a local parent, Heather Young, set up a Facebook page which had 100’s of likes within days.  Parents were posting their good quality used items that others could use, or posting details of what items they were looking for.

With support from Carefree Kids and Support from the Start the idea was developed further. People can donate new or good quality used items to Carefree Kids Toy Library in Tranent to be passed on to families in need. (The Bridge Centre in Haddington, the Bleachingfield Centre in Dunbar and the Community Centre in North Berwick will also take in uniforms to be sent on to Carefree Kids.)

We are asking for the support of professionals working in the local community to help identify these families in need. If you know of a family that would benefit from school uniform items please keep in mind that we may be able to help.  There are also grants available from East Lothian Council which might be of use to some families.

At this point we’re trying to build up a stock of uniforms for families to choose from. Whilst we’re doing this, we might not be able to meet the needs of everyone; however we’ll try our best.  We will keep you updated with the progress.  Please contact the School Uniform Bank on eastlothianschooluniformbank@carefreekids.org.uk with any enquiries.

How can parents access the uniform bank?

If you have a family you think we could help please provide them with a letter preferably on headed paper with your details stating you feel they would benefit from some assistance. Your recommendation is sufficient evidence to access the Uniform Bank.  The family can then present this letter to Carefree Kids in Tranent and they will be able to select some items they are in need of.  At this stage I would advise getting in touch with us before sending anyone along.  As mentioned earlier we are still building up stock and we wouldn’t want anyone making a wasted trip.

It may also be possible to arrange for items to be delivered if the parent or a family member could not reasonably be expected to access the Carefree Kids Toy Library in Tranent.

If you have any questions please get in touch.

Thank you
